Faculty Profiles

The College of Engineering at AUS is incredibly proud to have 89 outstanding full-time faculty, with 84 percent having earned their PhDs from leading universities in the US and Canada, 10 percent from leading universities in the UK, and 4 percent from leading universities in EU. The college also has 25 excellent lab instructors who hold at least a master's degree and are highly experienced. 

Representing diverse backgrounds, our faculty members have the required knowledge and expertise in their fields of specialization to deliver quality education. Several faculty members hold prestigious endowed chaired research positions sponsored by industry, such as the Petrofac Research Chair in Renewable Energy, Dana Gas Chair in Engineering, and the Riad T. Sadek Chair in Civil Engineering.

Our faculty are actively engaged in numerous research projects in their respective disciplines and many have received prestigious awards such as the Global Engineering Deans Council (GEDC)/Airbus Diversity Award, Abdul Hameed Shoman Award for Young Arab Researchers, Khalifa Award for Higher Education, Sheikh Rashid's Award for Outstanding Scientific Achievement, Technology Innovation Pioneer Award and the IBM Faculty Research Grant Award.

Women in Engineering

The AUS College of Engineering is committed to providing an encouraging and supportive environment for women, who are well represented in all the majors offered by the college at both the undergraduate and graduate level. In fact, there are more women currently pursuing a bachelor’s degree in chemical engineering at CEN than men. At the master’s and PhD level, women also outnumber men in the computer engineering and the engineering systems management programs.

Faculty Achievements
Dr. Amani Al-Othman, Associate Professor, Department of Chemical Engineering

According to Scival database powered by Scopus/Elsevier, Dr. Amani Al-Othman is the top scholar in the institution in the fields of "renewable energy, sustainability and the environment" and in "fuel technology" for the year range 2018-2022. The title is based on scholarly articles as well as citations.  

Dr. Amani's achievements and contributions include:

  • College of Engineering Excellence in Research Award for the year 2022.
  • Recognized among the top 2% of highly cited researchers in the world for the year 2022 according to the Stanford list.
  • Mentored multiple AUS teams who participated and won the first three places in the DuPont competitions held at AUS (September 2022).
  • Her research on fuel cells’ membranes was featured in various national platforms. The energy research team lead investigator and Associate Professor of Chemical and Biological Engineering at AUS, Dr. Amani Al-Othman explained the challenge. For more information, click here
  • Organized a field trip to SEWA as part of the major elective on energy course. The students learned about state-of-the-art technology currently used in desalination and integrated theory and practical knowledge (April 2022).
Dr. Vian Ahmed, Professor, Department of Industrial Engineering

Professor Vian Ahmed is a Professor in the Department of Industrial Engineering with more than 23 years of academic and industrial experience in the UK and overseas.

Her achievements and contributions as a woman in engineering include:

  • The launch of her third book, titled Validity and Reliability in Built Environment Research: A Selection of Case Studies, published by Routledge. This book aims to guide researchers who are engaged in social science and built environment research through the process of testing the reliability and validity of their research outputs following the application of different methods of data collection. The book presents case studies that emphasize reliability and validity in different examples of qualitative, quantitative and mixed method data sets, as well as covering action research and grounded theory. The book is available via Google Books.
  • CAA Certified reviewer training: Dr. Vian Ahmed has successfully completed phases I and II of the Certified Reviewer training held by the Ministry of Education's Commission for Academic Accreditation (CAA). This initiative aims to qualify academics in the UAE to be certified reviewers, which qualify them to work within the External Review Teams (ERT) to license higher education institutions and accredit academic programs inside and outside the UAE. Each phase of the certification program lasts three days with a rigorous assessment process. Professor Ahmed is looking forward to the final phase of the certification program which will be held in Fall 2022.
  • AUS as a smart campus case study: In recent years, the UAE has been at the forefront of smart city development. Governments across the Emirates have been investing in smart city technologies with the potential to make their cities safer, more efficient and more sustainable. Dr. Vian Ahmed has been keenly following the uptake of smart city innovations across the country, with a view to shaping educational campuses to become ‘smarter,” and contribute to the UAE’s broader goals for smart city development. Dr. Ahmed has been at the forefront of research to define the criteria of what makes a campus “smart” and the relative importance that students and other university stakeholders place on each of these criteria. Using AUS as a case study, Dr. Ahmed’s research has laid the groundwork for developing a decision support tool. By identifying which smart city criteria various university stakeholders (such as students, administrative staff, faculty and IT personnel) consider most important, university administrators have been better able to make decisions about which criteria or solutions to invest in in order to make their campuses smarter. The next step for her research is to further understand which smart city applications are most desired by university students, faculty and staff. She also hopes to study new pathways for future smart applications within campuses other than AUS, investigating how smart campuses can improve education quality and sustainability.
Dr. Rana Sabouni, Associate Professor, Department of Chemical Engineering

Dr. Rana Sabouni is an Associate Professor of Chemical Engineering at AUS.

Her achievements and contributions as a woman in engineering include:

  • Presenting as a keynote speaker at the 7th International Conference on Environmental Pollution, Treatment and Protection (ICEPTP’22), which was held April 10-12, 2022. Her speech was about “Recent Trends in Wastewater Treatment with Emphasis on Metal-Organic Frameworks (MOFs)”. About ICEPTP’22
  • A senior design project entitled Adsorption of Methyl Orange From Textile Industry Waste Using ZIF-8, ranked among the top three best senior design projects participated in the CEN Poster Open Day Competition.
  • Recipient of the Outstanding Interdisciplinary Research Group Award for the 2021-2022 academic year. The Drug Delivery Using Biological Targeting and Ultrasound Research Group is led by Dr. Ghaleb Husseini, Professor of Chemical Engineering, in collaboration with a number of professors from several departments at AUS (Chemistry, Biochemistry, Mechanical and Chemical Engineering) in addition to professors from other renowned international universities abroad, including University of Tours in France, and Brigham Young University in USA.
  • Leading an international research collaboration with Western University, Canada on a research project entitled A Novel Microwave and Light Stimuli-Responsive Anticancer Drug Delivery System (DDS) Based on Metal-Organic Framework (MOF) Nanocarriers. This project was awarded the Faculty Research Grant (FRG) 2021-2023. In her visit, Dr. Rana Sabouni met her Co-PI collaborator and reconnected with her ex-supervisors. In addition, Dr. Sabouni was able to utilize and conduct some unique characterization tests in the Surface Sciences Laboratory during Summer 2022.
  • Leading the AUS Engineering Shadow Program (ESP). October 12, 2022, marked the launch of the AUS Engineering Shadow Program (ESP), led by Dr. Rana Sabouni, Associate Professor of Chemical Engineering, and supported by Women in Engineering (WiE). The AUS Engineering Shadow Program (ESP) provides the opportunity for high school students in grades 11 and 12 to experience a day in the life of an AUS engineering student. This program is one of the first programs in the country to involve high school students in university activities. Shadows are paired with a current College of Engineering (CEN) student and attend their classes and meet professors and students. In addition, shadowing experience will also give the high school students a taste of the AUS university student’s life, from visiting our sports facilities to sampling campus cuisine in the Student Center. Moreover, shadows and their parents are invited to attend a celebration and award ceremony at the end of the program. During the ceremony, each participant will receive a certificate of participation and have the chance to meet with the CEN Engineering Faculty, Department Heads and Dean. Dr. Noha Hassan, Associate Professor, Department of Industrial Engineering

Noha M. Hassan Hussein has an accumulated experience of teaching a variety of courses including material science, manufacturing processes, computer aided manufacturing, facility planning and computer aided design. Her main research interest lies in the interrelationship between materials, manufacturing and design. Her expertise is in area of material modeling, examining material's behavior through numerical, experimental as well as microstructure analysis, manufacturing system modeling and processes optimization.

Dr. Noha's achievements and contributions include:

  • Leading the the development of the Department of Industrial Engineering's Industry 4.0 lab from concept development to commissioning and installation. The lab provides students with a hands-on education on Industry 4.0, incorporating state of art smart technologies and the Internet to better connect and automate the industrial process. The lab is equipped with a flexible manufacturing system with a tabletop CNC milling and turning machines, several robot manipulators, an inspection station, automatic storage and retrieval system integrated with a conveyor. The lab provides a safe and effective learning environment where hands-on practical education of Industry 4.0 concepts and technologies is experienced. The lab is integrated with several industrial engineering courses including advanced manufacturing systems, facility design, and quality management providing infrastructure for students to produce practice-oriented learning. It provides students with industry training and prepares them for professional certifications in Industry 4.0. Capstone students and research teams will use it as a platform to test new concepts in manufacturing innovation.
  • A recent publication with four female industrial engineering graduates—May Antar, Natalie Saleem, Sara Aboukhelil and Lina Ghonim—in Journal of Engineering Materials and Technology (Journal Rank: Q2; Impact Factor 1.419). The research examines the effect of synthesis procedure on particle dispersion and mechanical properties of Al–SiC Functionally Graded Metal Matrix Composite. Fabrication of Functionally Graded Metal Matrix Composites (FGMMC) especially with high ceramic reinforcement volume fraction is highly challenging. Depending on the processing technique and process parameters various defects may arise. In this research a  new method is proposed to make FGMMCs with the highest quality and minimum cost. Method incorporates lost-foam and melt infiltration with semicentrifugal casting and proved satisfactory in ensuring proper dispersion. J. Eng. Mater. Technol. Dr. Salam Dhou, Assistant Professor, Department of Computer Science and Engineering

Dr. Salam Dhou's areas of expertise include machine learning, data mining, computer vision, biomedical imaging and informatics. Prior to joining AUS she was a visiting assistant professor in the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science at the University of Missouri, St. Louis, USA. She worked also as a post-doctoral research fellow for three years in the School of Medicine at Harvard University where she published and participated in multiple research projects. 

Her contributions and achievements include:

  • Leading an international research collaboration with researchers at Harvard University and Cedars Sinai Medical Center on a research project entitled “Fluoroscopic 3D Image Generation using 4D-CBCT Images for Lung Cancer Patients Undergoing Stereotactic Body Radiation Therapy (SBRT)”. This project was awarded the Faculty Research Grant (FRG) 2022-2024.
  • Chairing a panel in the Women in Data Science (WiDS) conference, UAE, 2023, that was held in Heriot-Watt University Dubai. The title of the panel was "Generative AI and ChatGPT in Education: Challenges and Opportunities". The panel included female women working in the field of data science in the UAE. The panelists discussed the rapid advancements in generative AI, the opportunities that it provides in education and how the education sector can cope up with it in a meaningful way. They have also discussed the challenges and ethical concerns associated with generative AI and how educators can adjust their assessments to ensure that the learning outcomes are met with such tools.
Student Achievements
CEN chemical engineering senior design students secure a research grant

Under the supervision of Dr. Rana Sabouni, a team of chemical engineering students has received the CEN Undergraduate Research Grant for their senior design project titled "Metal-Organic Framework Composites for the Removal of Methyl Orange from Textile Wastewater." The team members, Abdulwahab Alaamer, Aysha Alali, Dana Al-Muqbel, Hind Alqassem, and Khawla Almazrooei, extend their appreciation to the Department of Chemical Engineering for providing an incubating environment that encourages undergraduate research and supports its students. The team is keen on making an impact with their research by promoting environmental protection.

CEN student presents in the 7th UAE Graduated Students Research Conference

Dr. Rana Sabouni’s master's student, Syeda Fiza, presented her research work entitled “Triggered Release of Doxorubicin from Metal-Organic Frameworks Using Microwave Irradiation as a Stimulus” at the 7th UAE Graduated Students Research Conference, which was held on March 24, 2022, in Dubai, UAE. In addition, Isra Abdelwahab presented her research work entitled “Light-Responsive Metal-Organic Framework for Doxorubicin-Controlled Release.”

CEN PhD-ESM students defend their dissertations

On March 15, 2023, three students from the College of Engineering (CEN) successfully defended their PhD in Engineering Systems Management (ESM) dissertations:

  • Afef Saihi defended her dissertation entitled, “Maintenance and Sustainability: Decision Support Tools and Role of Maintenance Digital Transformation” and her advisors were Dr. Mohamed Ben-Daya, Professor of Industrial Engineering, and Dr. Rami As’ad, Associate Professor of Industrial Engineering.
  • Batool Madani defended her dissertation entitled, “Routing of Hybrid Truck-Drone Delivery Systems: Mathematical Models and Solution Approaches” and her advisor was Dr. Malick Ndiaye, Associate Professor of Industrial Engineering.
  • Salma Ahmed defended her dissertation entitled, “Decision Support Model for Selecting the Project Delivery Method for Sustainable Construction Projects” and her advisor was Dr. Sameh El-Sayegh, Professor and Head of Civil Engineering.
CSE student participates in the YouthSpeak Conference

Computer Science and Engineering (CSE) student Jowaria Khan participated in the YouthSpeak conference, which is an annual regional conference powered by the Association for the International Exchange of Students in Economics and Commerce (AIESEC). This association is the world's largest international youth-run and led, non-governmental and not-for-profit organization that provides young people with leadership development, cross-cultural internships and global volunteer exchange experiences. As the Local Committee President of AIESEC in Sharjah, Jowaria led a team of 20 organizers, managed the conference finances and secured strategic partnerships.

CEN graduate students participate in the Women In Data Science event

College of Engineering (CEN) researcher and PhD student Eiman ElGhanam and CEN master's graduate Zahra Solatidehkordi delivered Lightning Talks at the Women In Data Science event at Herriot-Watt University-Dubai on May 27, 2023. In their talks, Eiman and Zahra gave a brief overview on their research activities on electrified transportation systems and human health monitoring, respectively. They highlighted how different data analytics and machine learning models were essential in improving the outcomes of their work.

CSE students win 4th place at Dell Technologies' Envision the Future Competition

In a remarkable achievement, a team of Computer Science and Engineering (CSE) students, consisting of Ansah Juned Siddiqui, Emaan Shahzad, Maheen Ghani, and Muhammed Noshin, advanced as finalists for their senior design project in the Dell Technologies’ Envision the 2022/2023 Future Competition, and were the only group from the UAE to be selected in the top five. They ranked #4 within the MENA region and #1 in the UAE. The team was supervised by Dr. Salam Dhou, Associate Professor of Computer Science and Engineering and Sameer Alawnah, Laboratory Instructor of Computer Science and Engineering. The project introduced an advanced breast cancer risk estimation system that employs an unsupervised machine learning method to analyze mammogram images for predicting breast density. This novel method offers comprehensive risk assessments to patients and healthcare professionals.

INE students participate in the 12th Sharjah IGCF 2023

A team of Industrial Engineering (INE) students, Salma Hussein, Jana Mohammed, and Azza Mukhtar, guided by their advisor, Dr. Abdulrahim Shamayleh, Associate Professor and Head of Industrial Engineering, proudly represented the American University of Sharjah at the "University Challenge" during the 12th Sharjah International Government Communication Forum IGCF 2023. This initiative provided the INE students with a dynamic platform to showcase their passion for creating a positive impact through sustainable effective communication.

Association of Women Engineers

The Association of Women Engineers (AWE) was initiated in Fall 2017 through a collaboration with two internationally renowned student chapters solely dedicated to the aim of giving women engineers a unique place and voice within the engineering industry. The student chapters are Society of Women Engineers (SWE) and the Women in Engineering (WIE) branch under the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE).

Faculty Innovation

Product Design Program

Starting Fall 2023, engineering students at AUS will have the opportunity to turn their innovative ideas into marketable solutions for businesses and communities through the CEN Technology and Engineering Product Design Program (PDP).  

Serving as an incubator for student ideas, the program helps students conceptualize, develop prototypes, receive financial planning training, including budgeting and sourcing, establish start-up trademarks and pitch their ideas to potential UAE and international investors. It also involves a series of workshops, seminars and consultations with business experts ensuring a comprehensive entrepreneurial learning experience.  

The PDP kicks off with three projects:

  • ShipX: Industrial engineer Alya AlMatrooshi is working on ShipX, an app that addresses the logistics needs of small and medium-sized businesses, offering advanced solutions that empower entrepreneurs.
  • E-Corp: Computer science and engineering team Mohammed Fawaz, Abdulrahman Shoaib and Hafsah Tahir are working on revolutionizing the waste management sector through a self-sustaining robotic solution.
  • Academica: Mahmoud Darwish, Qusai Al Tah and Jawwad Sheikh, envisions creating a centralized platform for students to access learning and experience enrichment opportunities that go beyond the traditional classroom.

NextGen Innovators Hub

NextGen Innovators Hub is a student-centric program for interdisciplinary innovation. The program aims to actively involve students from various majors in addressing real-life problems and challenges faced by the local community. This is a voluntary extracurricular activity open to Junior students. It doesn't count towards academic credit  but by participating in developing this program students will have the opportunity to:

- Engage in hands-on, real-world problem-solving.
- Collaborate with peers from different academic disciplines.
- Take on leadership roles within their projects.
- Think innovatively and come up with creative solutions to complex problems.
- Directly engage with their local community to address real issues.
- Gain practical experience that can be included in their resumes and portfolios.
- Work closely with faculty, community partners, and peers from various disciplines
- Expand their professional network.
- Extend their project into an interdisciplinary senior design project.

CEN Makerspace

We are pleased to let you know that the College of Engineering has established a CEN Makerspace in room EB2-001 to provide CEN students from all departments with the basic tools needed to build their senior design projects or any other project related to their studies/activities at AUS. The makerspace is also equipped with lockers to store your project when not working on it.

Please note that the CEN Makerspace in EB2 is a new initiative and is different from the previously announced makerspace hours in the different CEN labs under the supervision of lab instructors:

Watch an online video (15 minutes) on iLearn on general laboratory safety rules and sign the relevant consent form. Students will be registered in this iLearn course after filling the Google form.

Attend a training on how to use the different tools in the makerspace safely including 3D printers (about 2 hours). Training sessions will be held regularly and dates will be communicated to students who fill the Google form.
